WASHINGTON – As more companies publish net-zero transition plans, a group of NGOs has developed a new tool to enhance plan transparency and comparability. The group, which includes the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), BSR, Ceres, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), and We Mean Business Coalition (WMBC) will release the Transition Plan Index during New York Climate Week. The Index is a simple tool all companies with a transition plan can use to more clearly communicate the targets, timeline and strategies that make up their transition plan.
Implementing the Transition Plan Index is best practice for companies with a stand-alone plan and those whose plan is contained in another document such as an annual sustainability report. In both cases, use of the index enables more efficient communication of transition plan elements, assessment of plan completeness, and comparability across companies.
“Corporate transition planning – and the actions that underpin it – are key to achieving a resilient net-zero economy. The Transition Plan Index is a simple concept with the potential for significant impact,” said Nat Keohane, President of C2ES.
“Helping companies more clearly communicate their net-zero plans facilitates stakeholder assessment and feedback that will promote stronger business action on climate and clean energy.”
Transition Plan Index templates are available for GFANZ, TPT, ISSB, and ESRS planning guidance; additional guidance templates may be added to the Index in the future. An accompanying resource document includes in-depth instructions, best practices, transition plan resources and other helpful information. The Transition Plan Index templates and resource documents can be downloaded from the C2ES website.
