Columbia, South Carolina Roundtable on Battery and Ev Supply Chains
South Carolina is a growing leader in the manufacturing of EVs and the batteries that power them. The state’s strong manufacturing sector, advanced research institutions, and ability to attract new investments provide an opportunity to reap the benefits of new energy industries. This roundtable convened stakeholders to discuss South Carolina’s opportunity to help build out an American supply chain for the sourcing, refining, and recycling of critical materials for electric vehicle and battery manufacturing.
Securing the Supply Chain for South Carolina’s Battery and EV Industries
Our November 2024 event explored opportunities to secure supply chains of batteries for electric vehicles and stationary storage. Topics for discussion included:
- Mitigating Investment Risk in Battery Supply Chains
- Creating circularity for the battery industry
- Developing a dynamic advanced energy workforce

-
Mitigating Investment Risk in Battery Supply Chains:
- American companies and policymakers should consider strategies to stabilize rare earth metal pricing and promote domestic demand growth for recycled metals to increase U.S. competitiveness in the critical mineral market.
- Recent tax credits including 45X and 30D serve as the main drivers for encouraging domestic vehicle production and critical mineral mining and processing in the United States, due to the demand-pull these credits create for batteries and the critical minerals that comprise them.
-
Community Engagement in Project Development
- Large-scale projects are often kept secret until publicly announced, surprising the communities that host them and creating major challenges with authentic engagement and planning.
-
Creating Circularity in the Battery Industry
- Government incentives should more equally encourage the purchase of recycled materials and newly mined and manufactured materials to help encourage the growth of the battery recycling industry.
-
Developing the Workforce for South Carolina’s Advanced Energy Future
- Worker availability and skills to design, manufacture, and maintain batteries and electric vehicles will need to grow and evolve alongside South Carolina’s new energy industries.
